I get a lot of questions about the comics I read, so I decided to stick this up. Hopefully this answers your question. If not, feel free to ask anyway. I really don’t mind questions, even if it’s just “what comic was that, that you just reblogged?”
What comics do you read?
Batman. All the bats. Teen Titans (maybe not for much longer), Action Comics, and Superboy are what I keep up with regularly. I casually read a few other titles when they’re sent my way but I don’t religiously keep up with them.
Who’s your favorite character?
Tim Drake. Hands down.
I thought you loved Batman!
I do, I do! The bats and their symbol mean a lot to me. Tim is just my favorite of them.
What’s the New 52?
It’s the collective name of the comics that were restarted in the 2011 DC Reboot.
What’s Pre-Crisis?
Crisis’ are events that happened in the DC universe. When someone says “pre-crisis” or “post-crisis,” what they’re generally referring to is the Crisis that happened in the 80’s; the first one. It’s a clusterfuck to explain but the gist of the matter is, it gave the writers at DC a chance to canonically change a lot about the universe and try to give it better continuity. It was basically its own kind of “reboot.” If someone says “pre-crisis,” they’re talking about something that happened, or was canon, before the big change. “Post-crisis,” is something that happened after.
Oh ok, so that’s Identity Crisis?
Er, no. There were multiple crisis’. Identity was just one of them. You’ll stumble upon them if you decide to read anything pre-reboot. In the New 52, the Crisis’ have been erased so you don’t have to worry about them if you’re starting fresh.
What’s better; Marvel or DC?
It’s totally unfair to ask a Batman fan which company is better. Of course I’m gonna say DC! But really, Marvel is quite fantastic. I’m actually still in the process of reading up on my Marvel heroes myself, since I’ve stuck to DC in the past. A good friend of mine loves Marvel and is holding my hand through it all.
Honestly, both Marvel and DC have great titles and heroes to offer. It just depends on what you’re into.
Do you watch any superhero cartoons?
Yep. Young Justice only right now, and I can’t wait to start on Ultimate Spiderman. If you’ve got any series’ or animated features to recommend, I’m definitely all ears. I just love cartoons, man.
I want to get into comics, where should I start?
This is a big question, as I’m sure you’re aware since you’re asking me in the first place. If you want to read Marvel comics, I can’t help you. I know as much about Marvel as you do. If it’s DC you want, you’re in luck. They’ve just rebooted a lot of their titles, which is to say, everything was restarted from number 1 in September of 2011. You could catch up quite easily on any title you want!
If you’re looking for comics from before the reboot, then that’s a bit harder. My advice, pick a character/group of characters and just focus on them. Read everything you can on them and if you’ve got questions, Wikipedia or this place are your best friends.
How do I find a comic book shop?
I use this site whenever I’m in an area I don’t know. It’s pretty handy.
Where do you get yours?
Local shops for new releases, but if I want to read back issues I download them. I’m a pirate and only half-ashamed of it. On one hand, I really would rather buy them, but on the other, I’m a poor college student and back issues are generally out of print and quite a few are incredibly hard to find. DL is just more accessible for me.
I download torrents and you can get comic torrents from the same places you get music and tv shows. If you don’t know what a torrent is, google it. It’s not hard to figure out.
I just downloaded some stuff but I can’t read it. Help!
That’s because you don’t have a specific reader for viewing comics. There’s a few out there to choose from but the most popular are: ComicRack, Comical, CBR Reader, and C.B.R.. I use CDisplay.
Can I talk to you about comics?
Of courrrse. Talk to me all you want. We can bond n shit.
